The Medical Faculty at the University of Rijeka was founded in 1955 and has become one of the most respected medical faculties in Croatia over the past six decades. The university is defined by the most recent pedagogical and methodical approaches, and constant development of teaching and scientific research. Students at the University of Rijeka are prepared for their future careers throughout their studies with an integrated approach of teaching, specialised knowledge and skills, and the abilities to think independently and solve problems. As well as the quality of the course and the pleasant learning environment, the University of Rijeka offers various sporting and social activities through student organisations. The pleasant Mediterranean and mid-European surroundings of the city complete daily student life.
The city of Rijeka is the third biggest city in Croatia with a population of 144,000, and is located in the bay of the same name, which forms the northern end of the Kvarner Bay – one that is studded with islands. The ideal geographical location means that Rijeka is one of the most important harbours in Croatia. The Rijeka coastline is characterised by small bays due to its position on the Adriatic Sea. A popular holiday destination mainly with mid-European tourists, Rijeka offers an abundance of both cultural and scenic highlights. The many small beaches and historical old town should be particularly noted here.
An annual carnival has been taking place in Rijeka since 1982. The Rijeka carnival is heavily influenced by the Venetian carnival and is a special cultural highlight. Over 120,000 people attend the carnival each year, which takes place from mid-January to the end of February. Over 10,000 people actively take part in the parade, and they are arranged into 150 groups.
The Rijeka airport is located on the island of Krk just a few kilometres away, which is connected with the mainland with a bridge. Triest airport is also just shy of 80 kilometres away.
The university selects applicants based on several factors. Besides being based on English skills, admission decision will also be made by a selection committee. Good school grades in science subjects are particularly taken into consideration, as well
as a good result in the university’s entrance test.
